Habit Stacks for Founders

Habit stacking is the practice of chaining habits together, often around an anchor habit. Habit stacking is an invaluable tool for founders.

Nearly every founder has heard of Atomic Habits by James Clear, but barely any of the founders I work with actually use it!
Habit stacking is the practice of chaining habits together, often around an anchor habit. Here are some example habit stacks:

Every Morning

As soon as I open my laptop, I will:
🎯 Write down my top 3 goals for the day
✍ Answer the question how can I make today 1% better than yesterday?
✅ Organise my tasks based on the Eisenhower Matrix

Every Monday morning

When my calendar reminds me at 8:00, I will:
✍️ Write down the 5 things would make this week a successful one
⚖️ Rate my work life balance from 1 (bad) to 10 (good)
📅 Go through my calendar and make sure I have least 3 hours blocked for deep work
💪 Book in at least 2 gym sessions
…

Habit stacks increase your chance of success!

Have you ever heard yourself making a promise that you know you won’t keep?
  • “I’ll start giving feedback more regularly”
  • “I’ll start blocking time for deep work”

It’s easy to say these things, but as soon as you start your busy day all your good intentions will go out of the window!
Habit stacks will greatly increase the chance of making sure these things actually happen. If you’re like me, these need to happen first thing in the morning!

Don’t make it too complicated!

My advice is to keep it simple. I recommend starting with the above triggers: every day and once a week (some people prefer Sunday evening to Monday morning).
Start off with 3-4 habits and see how you go! Over time habits will naturally be added, removed and modified based on where you are with the business.
